For as long as there has been email marketing – there have been some “rules” that as small business owners, we’ve taken for granted. Here are a few examples( some of them are contradictory):
- Bests days and times to send – Tuesday morning is best (or maybe Friday).
- Never send on weekends.
- Keep every email short.
- Subject line length.
- Only one CTA.
- Follow the 80/20 rule.
- Never email your list more than once a week (or send on Tuesday and Friday).
- Use more images than text (or more text and images).
- Don’t (or do) use emojis in subject lines.
- Avoid the use of “Spammy” words in subject lines.
- Numbers in subject lines.
- List cleaning
Any of these sound familiar? It may be time to take a look at whether or not any of those email marketing rules are still valid. The folks behind Flodesk took a look at their own data – more than 14 billion emails sent by a huge variety of small businesses between January 2025 and now. They compared that data against those “rules” and in some cases, came up with some surprising results.
It may be time to challenge some of those email marketing rules we’ve been taking for granted as fact. To decide for yourself and your own business you can get the report here: Flodesk Email Marketing Trends Report
