Think your online business is too small to be targeted by cyber threats like malware, ransomware, and bad actor attacks? Think again. Cyber threats to online businesses are real – regardless of business size. They strike when you least expect it, and when they can do the most damage. And while having a plan in place to deal with cyber threats when they strike – it’s equally important to build security into your business processes – to prevent an attack before it happens.
The Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recommends four simple steps you can take to make your online business much safer from online dangers.
[1] Teach employees to avoid phishing: Phishing attempts are getting harder to spot. We’ve all gotten emails, texts, or messages that look and feel like they are legitimate. It takes some training to spot and appropriately deal with phishing attempts.
[2] Require strong passwords: Using a strong password manager can mage this easier for employees – and easier to enforce.
[3] Require multifactor authentication: Use MFA wherever possible – focusing first on the most vulnerable systems like email, file storage and VPNs. Tools like authenticator apps can make this process much easier.
[4] Update business software: Keep all software and operating systems up to date, and remove any that are no longer in use.
